Mulitrack Recording Overview
Multitrack recording is the prevalent form of recording practiced today in case of popular music albums and it refers to the process of recording various sections separately as multitracks and then combining them together to produce a single whole. Multitrack recording is widely used for recording purposes at present and it was as early as the 1940s that the process of multitrack recording was designed and conceived by the renowned guitarist Les Paul who managed to realize his design into reality with the help of Bing Crosby and the Ampex Corporation.
Since then multitrack recording has become the commonest form of recording. While multitrack recordings can be possible with the aid of analog devices like four to eight tracker cassettes though nowadays 24 track machines are used, digital formats are also used at present which includes recorded digital information kept in the form of tape storage like ADAT eight track machines and software hard disk devices involving multitrack audio recording software and a computer.
The musician records various parts of a song as separate tracks which are saved individually. After the recording is over, it is possible for him to listen to the recordings once more and combine the vocals and instrumentals accordingly and synchronize the whole in mixing consoles to create a total product in the end. One significant advantage of multitracking is that it allows the artist to re-record portions which are unsatisfactory and then choose among the tracks to decide which one to include in the final version.
Personal computers which support the use of sound cards and multitrack recording software like Free and Open Software facilitate multitrack recording possibilities in personal computers. The standard software for this purpose is Digidesign’s Pro Tools and other popular software components include Cubase from Steinberg and Logic Pro from Apple and are available in Internet domains widely apart from exclusive outlets of these brands. Multitrack recording has made recording process easier and less complicated ensuring better quality output.
