Using Digital Workstations

Digital workstations or digital audio workstations refer to a structure whose primary function is to allow play back as well as recording and editing of digital audio. It is also referred to as DAW and the most significant tools that aid its functioning include specialized audio hardware like audio converters which function as both digital to analog or DAC and analog to digital converters or ADC. The other equipment which is equally necessary in the efficient working of digital workstations comprise of audio multitrack software.  It was towards the end of the seventh decade of the 20th century that the first ever digital audio workstation was constructed by Soundstream Inc. with the help of a Digital PDP-11/60 minicomputer run by a Digital Audio Processor and was suitably assisted by a storage oscilloscope and disk pack drives. However, since the 1980s, with the abundant use of personal computers, the workings of digital workstations have greatly facilitated with the help of specially designed software and hardware components created specifically for the computers.  Some of these like Amiga and Atari ST have made its functioning more efficient producing better quality outputs.

The analogue recording technology is the technical device by means of which the DAWs function today and its working also embraces other objects like mixers or track controls and transport controls and presents a waveform display. One major attribute of DAW is the fact that it is possible to remove a previous recording which can act as a savior in times when a musical piece is mistakenly deleted or recorded over a former recording. Digital audio workstations are of two kinds, namely Integrated DAWs and Computer-based DAWs. The former consists of digital interface, control surface and mixing consoles and were popular means till the use of computer-based DAWs became prevalent. The latter uses digital audio software and an ADC-DAC. The major users of DAW technology include Nuendo, Digidesign Pro Tools and Cubase.
